The Gross Clinic

The Gross Clinic is the bloody realism of an 1875. Thomas Eakins painting of the renowned Philadelphia surgeon. Samuel Gross at work was deemed shocking and offensive in its day. Eakins had a unique feel for his subject from dissecting cadavers at  Gross’clinic At Jefferson Medical College. He portrays Gross in the middle of surgery on a young man’s infected femur , pausing to make a point to medical student. Eakins originally hoped the painting would be prominently displayed at the 1875 centennial exhibition in Philadelphia. Instead it debuted in an exhibit of an army hospital model ward and then languished in obscurity of years. In 2002  michael kimmelman of the new york times called it “hands down the finest  19th-century american painting.” When jefferson medical college put the Gross clinic up for sale five years later, the Philadelphia museum of art and the pennsylvania academy of fine arts raised $68 million to keep it in the city where eakins spent most of his life.

Dalam bahasa indonesia, text dan passage memiliki arti yang sama yakni teks. Tetapi dalam bahasa inggris U.S text memiliki arti sebuah topik panjang yang berupa teks yang memiliki pendahuluan topik, isi, dan penutup. Sedangkan passage merupakan sekelumit kalimat bagian dari text.

Text terdiri dari:

1.      Main Idea

Tujuan dari main idea adalah untuk menjadi garis besar setiap paragraf, atau menjadi ide pokok dari paragraf. Biasanya main idea berada di awal paragraf.

2.      Detail/negatife

Detail menggunakan kata who, where, when, dan kata sejenis yang jawaban dari pertanyaan sudah jelas keberadaanya di text.

Negatif merupakan tipe pertanyaan yang menanyakan kebalikan.

Menggunakan not, except, not mentioned, not scated.

not,dan  except berarti pernyataan yang salah dari sebuah text.

not mentioned, dan not scated bukan berarti pernyataan yang salah, melainkan pernyataan yang tidak di sebutkan dalam text.

3.      Vocabularies.

Banyak Kosakata yang di ingat dan di mengerti akan sangat membantu bagi sesorang untuk menjawab pertanyaan, tetapi jika tidak ingat. Seseorang harus pandai untuk menemukan kunci dari sebuah pertanyaan. Hal ini bisa di peroleh dari kalimat sesudahnya.

4.      References

References berarti rujukan, rujukan ini berarti sebuah kata dapat merujuk atau memiliki arti yang sama dengan kalimat sebelumnya.

5.      Inference

Inference berarti kesimpulan. Inference sering kali di jadikan sebuah soal.

Cara untuk menentukan inference adalah dengan membaca skimming dan scanning. Keduanya memiliki arti yang sama yakni membaca cepat, tetapi memiliki luas bidang yang berbeda. Skimming berarti kita mencari kalimat yang di maksudkan oleh soal, to the point terhadap paragraf atau kalimat yang kita butuhkan. Sedangkan scanning, kita membaca keseluruhan text untuk menentukan informasi atau apa yang di bahas di text.

Some people quietly show their respect during private service. They think about the present-day soldiers and heroes who have served in the past.
